We've been 'in sim' for three days now. The main consequence here at MDRS is that we can't go outside without our spacesuits on. Although our suits are not real life support systems, they do mimic the bulk, weight and general awkwardness of a real suit. Figuring out how to do field research in a heavy suit with thick gloves and little peripheral vision is no picnic, but that's exactly what we're here to do.

DUCK NEWS

First, the sad. We have lost Jessica(causes unknown) and Boss Hogg (suspected cause, old age.)

On the positive side, Lenny (from hereon known as "Leni") is nesting! She has wisely chosen to nest in our basement, where she is protected from her big, goofy cohorts and the elements. Unfortunately, she has to look at an unending number of cardboard boxes, which is dreary, and listen to the washer and dryer, which is boring.

We'll try to get a picture of the nest. There are at least 10 eggs. We are scheming to build some sort of duck walk from the nest directly into the pen, as we cannot release the ducklings until the are vaccinated.

Truly, the gift that keeps on giving.

Sad to hear about Jessica and Boss, but the eggs are very exciting! Do you know when she started sitting? You could probably figure out pretty well when they'll hatch, and just shut the basement until you're able to herd the ducklings into a box...

As if it weren't already the case, you are the biggest geek I know. On two planets.

We first saw the eggs a couple of weeks ago.

Speaking of geeks, off to Google to find the gestional period of eggs!

...and away!

What, I'm a geek because I'm interested in the gestational period of ducks, or because I've posted a picture of myself with a retrofitted garbage can lid on my head? Or because I even need to ask that question?

yes

Hey Kim,
As I represented myself as your agent to "Women & Guns " you really need to run all photos by me before you post them on any public site ( they're thinking of pulling your cover if you post any more "wacky" shots publicly

Come on Kim, think before you upload.
Disappointed,
BR

Sorry, BR. They just don't make space suits with cleavage, and moon boots with heels would just be weird.

By the way, I have found the most pointless kitchen appliance ever. Made by Ronco, of course.

I was there checking out food dehydrators. Does anyone have one they can lend and/or recommend?

I think Chrissy's brother has one. I will investigate.
